Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy – Species at Risk Inventories

I am coordinator with the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy.
Next week from Monday to Wednesday I will be up at our Alvar Bay Nature Reserve with Alison Howson from the Ontario Land Trust Alliance. We are doing inventories in hopes to get funding for species at risk stewardship projects on three of our nature reserves.
We will be out in the field completing inventories for these three properties and I was wondering if any of your members might be interested in assisting us. Alison is great with herps and plants but it would be great to get as many people out there with the knowledge necessary to complete a thorough inventory.
I know it is short notice but we would be happy to have you join us!
If anyone needs to contact me I’m usually good with responding to emails but here is my phone number, feel free to give it anyone who plans on joining us!

Our Alvar Bay Nature Reserve is actually a series of reserves along Cape Hurd Road that make up a total of 1000 acres. They are in the same area as the NCC and Ontario Nature reserves. I’ve attached a map for you. The address for Alvar Bay is 681 Cape Hurd Road.
Davison and Rumbold are the other two properties we hope to do inventories for. Davison is located off of Stokes Bay Road. Rumbold is a bit more difficult to access but as you can see it is in the same area as Davison. If you or any of your members plan to join us I can send you better maps and directions. We haven’t quite decided a schedule for visiting the properties but will most likely start early Monday morning at Alvar Bay. The Queensnake was observed on that property a few years ago so we hope that we might spot one again. Apparently a group of organizations has funding to undertake full Queensnake inventories across Ontario and the NCC is leading the surveys in the Bruce area. They will most likely conduct more extensive surveys of our nature reserve throughout the year.
Feel free to visit our website, we’ve only posted the nature reserves that are easily accessible but it will give you an idea of the area we are surveying.

The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy is holding its Fifth annual monarch butterfly festival on August 22-23. I’ve attached a flyer with information and a schedule of events going on at the festival. It will take place at the Bruce Peninsula National Park Visitor Center with a few guided nature walks at our Alvar Bay reserve. Feel free to extend an invitation to anyone who might be interested, attendance is free!

Red headed woodpecker

Brian and Sarah Robin report, “We’ve had an adult Red-headed woodpecker visiting our feeders (near Desboro) since at least May 19th, and it’s quickly established itself as the backyard bird-feeder boss. It looks like some juvenile brown feathers remain on its face and some wishful thinking has us believing it’s the juvenile that visited us last October.”

This year (2014) the OSFN has chosen Merle Gunby as a recipient of our Honourary Life Membership award. This award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to nature, research, education and conservation. Merle and his wife Sheila joined the OSFN in 1995 and since then Merle has spent many hours volunteering on numerous projects for the OSFN.
