Volunteers needed for Queensnake survey
Hello!
I’m coordinating surveys for the endangered Queensnake on the Bruce Peninsula as part of a larger project with multiple partners investigating queensnakes across their range in Ontario.
John Grant suggested I get in touch with you to see 1) if you ever see queensnakes on the Bruce, and 2) if you or any of your members would be interested in participating in queensnake surveys on the Bruce Peninsula.
I am hoping to conduct a round of surveys this Friday Aug 21 at Baptist Harbour, Saturday Aug 22 at Emmett Lake and Sunday Aug 23 at Lower Andrew Lake and need at least one volunteer to help. The work will involve working in the shallow water at these sites, actively looking for snakes then conducting crayfish surveys and gathering habitat data following a standardized protocol. Whoever is volunteering should be comfortable catching and handling snakes, as well as accessing some sites by canoe and hiking (the Emmett Lake and Lower Andrew Lake sites are harder to reach – with the Lower Andrew Lake site requiring crossing a portage). I know it’s a bit short notice, but if you have anyone who might be interested, please pass this email along.
If these dates don’t work well, I may also be doing a survey over a weekend in September – although I don’t have anything definitive for September yet.

New species for Grey Bruce
Crataegus irrasa
This plant has been identified by J.B. Phipps (University of Western Ontario) as being Crataegus irrasa.
As seen in the photo it has 20 white anthers which is what brought it to my attention. It is located at the roadside across from the north entrance to Stonewyck (Trailer) Park in Georgian Bluffs. I believe there is another plant of the same species located east of Holland Centre. Herbarium specimens of both these plants have been deposited at the ROM
