Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia: A Photographic Expedition into Southern Spring.
January 12, 2017 @ 7:00 pm
Speakers: Willy Waterton and Audrey Armstrong
Members free, others by donation. Refreshments available.
Willy and Audrey will share their experiences from a 21 day expedition, including sea kayaking, hiking and even a polar dip with One Ocean Expeditions, a Canadian company based in Squamish, BC. On board a polar research ice strengthened ship, roughly the same length as the Chi-Cheemaun, they travelled from the tip of South American (12 thousand km from Toronto) over the Drake Passage, considered to be one of the roughest seas in the world, to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula last November, which is the southern hemisphere’s spring, on their 5,500 nautical mile journey. Six species of penguins and other wildlife were abundant as well as plants, whales, seals, lots of icebergs and a volcanic caldera. Reminiscent of the Bruce’s rugged east coast in winter, come and find out why Audrey and Willy have embraced Polar travel. Some photo products will be available for sale with 10% going towards the OSFN.
OSFN Indoor Meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Bayshore Community Centre, 1900 3rd Ave E Owen Sound. There are no Indoor Meetings in July and August. Please see the individual event listings below for more details.
We invite speakers with a wide range of expertise from Grey/Bruce and other parts of the province. These evenings are open to the public. The auditorium is open by 6:30. The meeting gets under way at 7:00, and may include brief announcements by other organizations as well as OSFN club activities, club business, social time, nature sightings and reports.
The club also offers a full schedule of outdoor activities during the year. Through these outings, members learn more about the birds, plants, mammals and geology of this part of Ontario. We also keep a protective eye on our precious natural areas.
