Grey Roots Spring Lecture Series – John Muir Lived Here in Grey County
March 26, 2024 @ 1:30 am – 2:00 am
Join us on Tuesday March 26 at 1:00 PM for John Muir Lived Here in Grey County with Robert Burcher.
Robert Burcher is a photographer, writer, historical researcher and wilderness explorer who has been fascinated by John Muir, the Scottish-born American conservationist and Sierra Club co-founder, for decades.
The discovery of an abandoned historical plaque in the Epping Conservation Area in the Beaver Valley galvanized Robert to action. The plaque honoured the fact that John Muir had lived in Meaford for two years during the late 1800s. That was the beginning of a 30-year research project culminating in a book called My Summer of Glorious Freedom. The book was a discovery process of tracing Muir’s 1864 wanderings in Southern Ontario using plant specimens that he had collected. While living in Meaford, Muir made several subsequent trips to Owen Sound to study with fern specialist Jessie Roy.
This presentation is part of the 2024 Spring Lecture Series taking place in the Grey Roots Theatre on Tuesdays March 19, 26, and April 2 (series starts the Tuesday after March Break). Talks begin at 1:00 PM. Complimentary refreshments following. Lectures are free with regular admission. Members free as always. Check out the advantages of Grey Roots Membership.
This presentation is supported by the Owen Sound Field Naturalists.
John Dickson was able to re-establish OSFN Programming partnering with Grey Roots. It had been interrupted by COVID.
Our main involvement in this venture has been to demonstrate our support of programmes at Grey Roots which have a Nature theme. Two events in their Spring Lecture series fit that very well. March 19 and March 26 with Robert Burcher.
In addition, OSFN members who are not already members at Grey Roots, (many of us are members of both) may attend these popular events for free. Ideally they should wear their OSFN name tags while at Grey Roots, to avoid any confusion.
We hope this especially benefits OSFN members who were unable to attend these presentations when we had them in our own event series a few years ago, or who would like to see them again, and visit Grey Roots too.
OSFN Indoor Meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Bayshore Community Centre, 1900 3rd Ave E Owen Sound. There are no Indoor Meetings in July and August. Please see the individual event listings below for more details.
We invite speakers with a wide range of expertise from Grey/Bruce and other parts of the province. These evenings are open to the public. The auditorium is open by 6:30. The meeting gets under way at 7:00, and may include brief announcements by other organizations as well as OSFN club activities, club business, social time, nature sightings and reports.
The club also offers a full schedule of outdoor activities during the year. Through these outings, members learn more about the birds, plants, mammals and geology of this part of Ontario. We also keep a protective eye on our precious natural areas.
