Connecting the Dots In Geology w/Dan Ostler

December 12, 2019 @ 7:00 pm

***NEW SPEAKER***We regret to inform you that Peter Middleton (our scheduled speaker for this evening’s Indoor Meeting of OSFN) has come down with a nasty case of the flu and will need to take some time to recover. He also regrets being unable to present to you this evening, but has offered a bonus session for the club, to be scheduled when he has recovered.

In the meantime OSFN Club Member Dan Ostler has kindly agreed, on very short notice, to be our speaker this evening. You may remember that Dan filled in so admirably with a climate change talk two years ago. His talk was of the highest quality and members requested an encore! He has also received recognition as a favourite lecturer on International Cruise Ships.

The topic tonight will spring from this tagline –

“Prompted by the recent volcanic eruption on White Island in New Zealand”

***NEW VENUE***
We have been gradually outgrowing the facility at the Owen Sound Library and invite you to join us on December 12, 2019 in the Bay Room at the BAYSHORE COMMUNITY CENTRE, 1900 3rd Ave E, Owen Sound, ON N4K 2M6.

The Hospitality Team is going to take a holiday and will not be serving coffee or tea. You are welcome to bring your own GO mug with coffee or tea. This month, there will be none provided by the Club.

We call it a garden. They can call it home.

Peter Middleton’s talk focuses on the role gardens play as habitat for birds, in a time when bird populations face ever mounting challenges to their survival. Essential elements of habitat will be considered and how they can be achieved through planning. “The elements will be illustrated using our garden as a model. The place of birds in the planet’s biological diversity is a constant sub-theme.”

Please Note:
Peter is retiring from the lecture/leader circuit. Make sure you attend, and bring your friends, for this presentation. Peter’s presentation style and extensive knowledge will be missed. Let him know that by your presence; consider taking the time at this busy time of year to give him the gift of your presence.

OSFN Indoor Meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Bayshore Community Centre, 1900 3rd Ave E Owen Sound. There are no Indoor Meetings in July and August. Please see the individual event listings below for more details.

We invite speakers with a wide range of expertise from Grey/Bruce and other parts of the province. These evenings are open to the public. The auditorium is open by 6:30. The meeting gets under way at 7:00, and may include brief announcements by other organizations as well as OSFN club activities, club business, social time, nature sightings and reports.

The club also offers a full schedule of outdoor activities during the year. Through these outings, members learn more about the birds, plants, mammals and geology of this part of Ontario. We also keep a protective eye on our precious natural areas.
