Your Anishinaabe guide will provide history and insights into a variety of plants\, wildlife\, and cultural traditions.”Trail difficulty is easy to moderate depending on fitness level and weather conditions (i.e. rain can make some sections slippery). Some incline areas along the trail. No technical areas. Hiking poles are recommended for balance. The final portion of the hike will be fairly steep going down towards the parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Invertebrate Identification with Rosie MartinSaturday November 6th\, 2:00-5:00 pm\, Harrison ParkMax group size 25 (drop in/out style rather than hike)Meet in Harrison Park (by the river just east of the playground washrooms\, see attached map) to learn tips on how to identify aquatic insects like (larval) dragonflies\, damselflies\, mayflies\, caddisflies and more. I will have tables set up with microscopes and invertebrates collected from a nearby beaver pond. The event will run from 2:00-5:00 on a drop in/drop out basis. I will be giving a stream sampling demonstration around 2:30\, and will talk briefly about differences between organisms living in lentic and lotic habitats. Kid friendly (please supervise around water)!Please send me an email if you want to attend at rosemary.martin@mail.utoronto.ca so I can keep track of attendance for contact tracing purposes. Please bring a mask if you wish to use the microscopes\, hand sanitizer will be provided.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRosemary “Rosie” Martin is a senior PhD Candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her work focuses on how aquatic insects overwinter and how the under-ice physical conditions determine who survives\, who stays active\, who eats whom\, and how that all plays into food web and community structure in subsequent seasons. Emma completed her M.Sc. in arctic ecology at the University of Toronto and her B.A. in forest conservation. She has been involved in several community science research initiatives across Ontario\, ranging from biochar to salamanders and turtle road mortality to agricultural pests. Emma has worked for the University of Toronto\, Trent University and a community-based research centre in Haliburton County. Besides her passion for ecology\, Emma enjoys cross-country skiing\, birding and hiking.
