SUMMARY:Resilience with Marilyn Struthers and John Anderson
DESCRIPTION:The Field Naturalists welcome John Anderson & Marilyn Struthers in a conversation about our beautiful community and climate change. The film Resilience was created locally to build awareness and engagement in the most pressing threat to our natural environment in our life times. \n\n\n\nWatch the film\, and then come for a discussion about what we can do to play our part in preserving the beautiful landscapes we live in.  John and Marilyn will talk about how they came to be a part of local film-making\, what has happened since and what are others doing in our community now. They will create the opportunity to meet in small groups and think together about what we are thinking about and doing now – and how our contributions can fit together. \n\n\n\nJoin a ZOOM meeting where Marilyn Struthers and John Anderson will facilitate and host a discussion motivated by the film Resilience: Transforming our Community. Those participating will form small discussion groups (break out groups).  These groups will cover certain topics and issues; and will then be drawn into a sharing of discussion/planning results and a wrap up.Anyone planning to attend the ZOOM event on November 12\, is asked to watch this movie in advance of the meeting. You can find the film on You Tube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i0mbMcQmrg&feature=youtu.be \n\n\n\nOr visit the Resilience webpage for more information about the project:https://resiliencedoc.info/ \n\n\n\nDetails on how to join the Zoom meeting will be sent out in an e-Herald Wednesday Nov. 11th. Or email web@owensoundfieldnaturalists.ca for the links!

SUMMARY:Hope Bay Nature Reserve with Bob Gray\, Geology and More
DESCRIPTION: Hope Bay Nature Reserve with Bob Gray\, Geology and More – \n\n\n\nExploring amazing potholes and sinkholes at Hope Bay Nature Reserve\, along with these highlights –            “Right now\, for the folks that enjoy botany\, there are a good number of cut leaved grape fern and leathery grape fern present at the site. For wildlife enthusiasts\, there are several beech trees present with bear claw marks on them from feeding on beech nuts at some point in the past.  For the physical geography buffs\, the sink holes are amazing (photos do not do them justice). As the sinkholes are off trail\, it tends to be a bit more of a rugged hike than just hiking on the Bruce Trail.  Participants will need to be in decent physical shape to be able to do this.”                                                          Meet at the Bruce Trail on the Albemarle/Eastnor Town Line.                Register with Bob Gray at kemblemt1@gmail.com or 519-371-9128Due to COVID\, people are going to have to respect physical distancing\, and wear a mask if they wish. \n\n\n\nCut-Leaved Grape Fern (Bob Gray)

SUMMARY:Introduction to How to Attract and Identify Moths.
DESCRIPTION:A Moth Night – An Introduction to How to Attract and Identify MothsWhen: Wednesday August 4\, 2021Time: 9 pm – 11:15 pm (Aug 5 – Rain Date) plus Thursday August 5 at 7 am to open Moth traps for ID\, Photos and ReleaseWhere: Grey Sauble Conservation Administration Centre and Arboretum\, 237897 Inglis Falls Road\, RR 4\, Owen Sound\, Ontario N4K 5N6 \n\n\n\nAlan Macnaughton has good equipment and techniques for attracting moths\, and he can show other people how to do it. He will set up several stations and use several lights (black light) and bait (rotting bananas). It will be an excellent opportunity to learn various methods of attracting moths.  \n\n\n\nTo register – please contact: jwdickso@gmail.com  Priority will be given to OSFN members\, but please register early to avoid disappointment.  \n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19\, Public Health Guidelines will be observed\, including masks and social distancing. \n\n\n\nExtra information – Guests of OSFN – Area members of the Toronto Entomologists’ Association may be joining us. \n\n\n\nEquipment –Bring cameras or phones for taking pictures and perhaps some transparent pill bottles to temporarily capture the moths for handing around to others before they are released. Phones are often best because they may have an internet connection (is this possible in the park?) to allow uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website for automated (image recognition software) species identification. Also\, if they happen to have it\, bring the Leckie and Beadle book\, Peterson Field Guide to the Moths of Northeastern North America. One of the lights is bright and some people might want sunglasses when they get near it. \n\n\n\nBinoculars are not needed. You will be able to touch the bugs. \n\n\n\nMoth at Porchlight (Photo by Brian Robin)

SUMMARY:Monarch Tagging Workshop with Audrey Armstrong
DESCRIPTION:This family friendly event will take place on Saturday August 21 (rain date August 22) from 1 to 3 pm at the Isaac Lake Boat Launch just north of Wiarton. How is it that monarch butterflies migrate 4\,000 km to a place they’ve never been before? Why do we still need Citizen Scientists to assist in a North American monarch tagging initiative? How can they fly with a tiny “license plate” stuck to one wing? And how can you help monarchs in our Grey/Bruce area? These questions and your questions will be addressed in the afternoon tagging workshop. We hope to net and tag monarchs to send off to Mexico\, so wear your running shoes and bring your insect nets (some will be provided). Please pre register with Audrey at: sweetwateraudrey@gmail.com. Numbers to be determined by COVID regulations. Once you register\, further details will be sent to you. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Brian Robin
