SUMMARY:ANNUAL POTLUCK SUPPER & PRESENTATION
DESCRIPTION:**** Last meeting of the year\nPlease note location – not at Library: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church\, 865 1st Ave. W\, Owen Sound \nBring your own plates\, cutlery and cup or mug\, and bring a food dish to share\, along with serving utensils. Followed by – \nDr. Larry Peterson – University of Guelph\nTHE FASCINATING BIOLOGY OF ORCHIDS \nThere are over 800 genera and 25\,000 species in the Orchidaceae. Dr. Larry Peterson will discuss features of orchid biology that have led to rapid speciation in the family. Topics will include pollination mechanisms\, associations with beneficial fungi\, adaptations to a wide range of terrestrial habitats and the success of this group as epiphytes. The amazing diversity in floral forms has led to a multi-million dollar horticultural industry but has also resulted in many orchid species being poached from the wild. Because of this\, and destruction of habitats\, over 300 species are listed as endangered or threatened.

Refreshments available. \nWilly and Audrey will share their experiences from a 21 day expedition\, including sea kayaking\, hiking and even a polar dip with One Ocean Expeditions\, a Canadian company based in Squamish\, BC.
