DESCRIPTION:The Oliphant Shoreline will be the topic featured as part of our annual potluck at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Start time has been moved up to 6:00 PM sharp. Bring a food dish to serve 8 to 10 people and plates and cutlery for yourself. Theresa Stafford\, Chair of the Friend’s of the Oliphant Coastal Ecosystems (FOOCE)  and Geoff Peach of the Coastal Centre\, will introduce us to the wonders of the superb Oliphant coastline.  Together these two groups have worked to identify and preserve the unique\, diverse and fragile ecosystems that dot the shallow shorelines and the offshore islands.  FOOCE has in its short life moved quickly with the Coastal Centre to identify and balance the demands of preservation with increasing recreational pressures and community heritage.  They are working to ensure a unique and precious natural legacy for the future.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 12\, starting at 7:30 am.The Bruce Peninsula Bird Observatory’s migration monitoring station near the tip of the Bruce in the midst of this spring’s migration monitoring.  We’ll walk the net lanes with station scientist Stepane Menu and Rod Steinacher\, the chair of the BPBO board.  Well watch as they band\, record and release birds in CHRS’s banding station   We will also see what BPBO has done to take the station off the grid.\nLimit 10 participants.  We will meet in the parking lot of the tourism office in Springmoun  at 7:30 am.   We’ll plan to arrive at the station by around 9:00 am. For George this represents the final location in North America north of Mexico not previously visited\, and a continuation of a lifetime of study and photography of the nesting (nidiology) of North American birds.\nThis trip netted 26 life birds\, 51 species photographed\, and 30 species’ nest and eggs photographed.\nHabitats\, mammals and some plants were noted. \nGeorge’s Presentation will be followed by the Annual General Meeting \nYou can still donate to the Conservation Trust Fund of the Owen Sound Field Naturalists in memory of Lorraine Brown. Doug Cunningham will lead us through the development of the theory\, from Alfred Wegener in 1912 to Canadian physicist Tuzo Wilson in the 1960’s. Plate tectonics causes earthquakes and volcanoes. DESCRIPTION:To recognize the millennium\, Steve Irvine\, photographer and potter\, and Bill Loney\, owner of Keppel Croft Farm and Gardens\, undertook a project with historical\, astronomical\, sculptural and spiritual references.  “Keppel Henge” is located at Keppel Croft farm near Big Bay.  Steve will lead us on a tour of this magical site.  We’ll meet to carpool at the tourism office at Springmount at 9 am and at Bluewater Park in Wiarton at 9:30.
