SUMMARY:Chasing Lemurs: From Research to Conservation in Madagascar
DESCRIPTION:October 10      Chasing Lemurs: From Research to Conservation in Madagascar \n\n\n\nCome celebrate World Lemur Day with a presentation by explorer\, author\, and conservationist Dr. Keriann McGoogan and explorer\, anthropologist\, and conservationist Dr. Travis Steffens. They will take us on a journey to Madagascar to learn about the amazing wildlife and landscapes\, the challenges of field research\, and how they are working to create sustainable forest communities through their charity Planet Madagascar. Madagascar is truly a place like no other and is the only place lemurs are found naturally — sadly these primates are the most endangered animals in the world. Keriann and Travis will have copies of Keriann’s book\, Chasing Lemurs and some products from Madagascar for you to purchase if you want to help support lemur conservation.

DESCRIPTION:Monarch tagging workshop with Audrey Armstrong\, Patti Byers and Brian Robin\n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, August 24\, 2025Time: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm\n\n\n\nHow is it that monarch butterflies migrate 4\,000 km to a place they’ve never been before? Why do we still need Citizen Scientists to assist in a North American monarch tagging initiative? How can they fly with a tiny “license plate” stuck to one wing? And how can you help monarchs in our Bruce Grey area? These questions and your questions will be addressed in the afternoon tagging workshop. We hope to net and tag migrating monarchs as part of Monarch Watch Citizen Science research\, so wear your running shoes and bring your insect nets (some will be provided). \n\n\n\nThis is a family friendly event. \n\n\n\nRegister: Audrey Armstrong at: sweetwateraudrey@gmail.com for location information.Waiver: Waiver Aug 24\, 2025 Monarch Tagging – Google Forms

SUMMARY:Adam Shoalts:Vanished Beyond the Map - The Mystery of Lost Explorer Hubert Darrell
DESCRIPTION:Adam Shoalts:Vanished Beyond the Map – The Mystery of Lost Explorer Hubert Darrell. Both famed for their long solo journeys ranging from Alaska to Hudson Bay\, a century later\, archaeologist and naturalist Adam Shoalts traces Darrell’s lost pathways to solve one of exploration history’s enduring cold cases—the mystery of Hubert Darrell.  Sponsored by Dr. Mark Robertson. \n\n\n\nDescription: National bestselling author Adam Shoalts will join us to discuss his well-known expeditions in Canada’s wilderness\, including crossing nearly 4\,000 km of Canada’s Arctic alone. Shoalts will also share with us his most recent book\, Vanished Beyond the Map\, about a legendary explorer who disappeared more than a century ago and Shoalts’s quest to retrace his route.  This event is in-person at the Bayshore only – sorry no recording or Zoom portion. \n\n\n\nBio: Adam Shoalts is a professional adventurer and Westaway Explorer-in-Residence at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. His expeditions range from mapping rivers to archaeological projects\, but Shoalts is best known for his long solo wilderness journeys\, including crossing alone nearly 4\,000 km of Canada’s Arctic. Named one of the “greatest living explorers” by CBC and declared “Canada’s Indiana Jones” by the Toronto Star\, Shoalts’s latest quest was retracing the route of a lost explorer\, the subject of his new bestselling book Vanished Beyond the Map. His other books include Where the Falcon Flies\, The Whisper on the Night Wind\, A History of Canada in 10 Maps\, and Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada’s Arctic\, all of them national bestsellers. He has a PhD from McMaster University in history\, and in his free time\, enjoys long walks in the woods.
