SUMMARY:Grey Roots Spring Lecture Series - Orchid Quest w/ Audrey Armstrong & Willy Waterton
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS and UPDATE: Due to popular demand\, Grey Roots have added a second lecture time of 2:30 pm. You can choose which time you prefer – 1:00 or 2:30 pm. It will be the same presentation at both times. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Tuesday March 19 at 1:00 PM or 2:30 PM for Orchid Quest: with Audrey Armstrong & Willy Waterton\, Searching for Bruce & Grey’s 49 orchid species. \n\n\n\nDid you know that Orchids of Bruce & Grey is a Canadian bestseller?  When the Owen Sound Field Naturalists (OSFN) planned to revise the out of print guide\, Willy Waterton and Audrey Armstrong volunteered to update the original analogue photos of the orchids with digital imagery. The new\, fully illustrated 5th edition has two pages for each of the 49 species of orchids from Bruce and Grey counties. Join Audrey and Willy for an engaging recounting of their two-year orchid quest adventure and enjoy a fascinating overview of the many orchid species found throughout Ontario! Copies of the revised Orchids Bruce & Grey will be available for sale\, with all proceeds going to OSFN. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the 2024 Spring Lecture Series taking place in the Grey Roots Theatre on Tuesdays March 19\, 26\, and April 2 (series starts the Tuesday after March Break). Talks begin at 1:00 PM. A second talk has been added at 2:30 PM. \n\n\n\nComplimentary refreshments following. Lectures are free with regular admission. Members free as always. Check out the advantages of Grey Roots Membership. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is supported by the Owen Sound Field Naturalists. John Dickson was able to re-establish OSFN Programming partnering with Grey Roots.  It had been interrupted by COVID. \n\n\n\nOur main involvement in this venture has been to demonstrate our support of programmes at Grey Roots which have a Nature theme. Two events in their Spring Lecture series fit that very well. March 19 and March 26 with Robert Burcher. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, OSFN members who are not already members at Grey Roots\, (many of us are members of both) may attend these popular events for free. Ideally they should wear their OSFN name tags while at Grey Roots\, to avoid any confusion.  \n\n\n\nWe hope this especially benefits OSFN members who were unable to attend these presentations when we had them in our own event series a few years ago\, or who would like to see them again\, and visit Grey Roots too.

SUMMARY:Grey Roots Spring Lecture Series - John Muir Lived Here in Grey County
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday March 26 at 1:00 PM for John Muir Lived Here in Grey County with Robert Burcher. \n\n\n\nRobert Burcher is a photographer\, writer\, historical researcher and wilderness explorer who has been fascinated by John Muir\, the Scottish-born American conservationist and Sierra Club co-founder\, for decades. \n\n\n\nThe discovery of an abandoned historical plaque in the Epping Conservation Area in the Beaver Valley galvanized Robert to action. The plaque honoured the fact that John Muir had lived in Meaford for two years during the late 1800s. That was the beginning of a 30-year research project culminating in a book called My Summer of Glorious Freedom. The book was a discovery process of tracing Muir’s 1864 wanderings in Southern Ontario using plant specimens that he had collected. While living in Meaford\, Muir made several subsequent trips to Owen Sound to study with fern specialist Jessie Roy. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the 2024 Spring Lecture Series taking place in the Grey Roots Theatre on Tuesdays March 19\, 26\, and April 2 (series starts the Tuesday after March Break). Talks begin at 1:00 PM. Complimentary refreshments following. Lectures are free with regular admission. Members free as always. SUMMARY:Meeting The American Kestrel\, with John Reaume
DESCRIPTION:Meeting The American Kestrel\, with John Reaume \n\n\n\n For the past 4 years we have had the pleasure of watching a pair of American Kestrels nest and raise their young in a Kestrel/Screech Owl box mounted on our workshop and visible from our back porch. This photo essay will explore and review the life history of the Kestrel with intimate views of their nesting behaviour\, thanks to an “in-the-box” camera as well as images captured from photo blinds. We will see the differing behaviours of the male and female parents as well as what the avian neighbours think of having a pair of nesting kestrels in their territories! \n\n\n\nJohn Reaume (photo by John Reaume)\n\n\n\nNesting Kestrels (photo by John Reaume)

The spring creek that can be found at the north end of the forest would have made this location highly suitable for farming activities. This property became a managed forest in 1954 when Grey County took ownership over the lands.

SUMMARY:Mothing with Alan Macnaughton and Discovery Program Staff
DESCRIPTION:The moths you see are different depending on the season and habitat. \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, July 16\, Alan Macnaughton will be at MacGregor Point Provincial Park. Alan is a popular presenter with our Club. \n\n\n\nAlan plans to spend about half an hour with an indoor presentation in the Visitor Centre outlining some highlights of his life-long interest in Moths. Then the session will move outside to the Amphitheatre nearby to see what moths will be attracted to Alan’s equipment and set up. This component of the evening is expected to last until about 11:15 pm; but you can leave at anytime. \n\n\n\nThis Moth Night is part of the Discovery Program at MacGregor Point Provincial Park and is therefore not an OSFN event. If you wish to attend\, access to the park is on the usual basis of an Annual or Season’s pass\, or a Daily Vehicle Permit of $18.00 per vehicle. There is no additional cost for the program itself. \n\n\n\nConsider going early enough to enjoy the beach or the trails in the park and taking a picnic dinner; but please arrive at the Visitor Centre 15 minutes before the program starts. \n\n\n\nThrough the OSFN\, Alan Macnaughton will be providing a Moth Night in Owen Sound as part of our fall program schedule.

DESCRIPTION:It’s a bird\, it’s a plane\, it’s a dragonfly!Join OSFN at 10:00 am\, Friday August 2nd***  (Rain Date: Saturday August 3rd\, 10:00am) to learn more about Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies)\, a group of ferocious and beautiful insects that has been dominating the sky (and water) for around 300 million years. \n\n\n\nTogether we’ll go over the difference between dragonflies and damselflies\, some species identification\, how to tell the difference between males and females\, learn how researchers collect dragonfly eggs\, and more! Rosie will have some aerial/butterfly nets available so you can test your arm at catching (if you have your own please bring it along)! \n\n\n\nNon-pristine running shoes or rubber boots are encouraged as some areas may be mucky. \n\n\n\nLocation is still being decided (we should know by the evening of the July 31st). Please arrive as close to 10:00am as possible\, as we’ll go over safe handling instructions together at the beginning. \n\n\n\nRosie will stick around until noon or so\, but feel free to stay for as long or short as you want. \n\n\n\nContact Rosie at rosemary.martin00@gmail.com with the subject “OSFN Odonates” to sign up for the event. \n\n\n\nGroup size may be limited to ~15 people due to parking limitations. Children welcome! \n\n\n\nRosemary “Rosie” Martin completed her PhD at the University of Toronto Mississauga in 2023\, with a thesis focus on how dragonflies and other aquatic insects overwinter. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at Michigan State University where she is studying the physiology and energetics of overwintering dragonflies. Rosie has been a member of OSFN since 2021 and looks forward to connecting with members again during her brief visit home!

DESCRIPTION:Monarch tagging workshop with Audrey Armstrong\n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, August 25\, 2024Time: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm \n\n\n\nThis is a family friendly event. \n\n\n\nHow is it that monarch butterflies migrate 4\,000 km to a place they’ve never been before? Why do we still need Citizen Scientists to assist in a North American monarch tagging initiative? How can they fly with a tiny “license plate” stuck to one wing? And how can you help monarchs in our Bruce Grey area? These questions and your questions will be addressed in the afternoon tagging workshop. We hope to net and tag migrating monarchs as part of Monarch Watch Citizen Science research\, so wear your running shoes and bring your insect nets (some will be provided). \n\n\n\nRegister: Audrey Armstrong at: sweetwateraudrey@gmail.com for location information.Waiver: Waiver Aug 25\, 2024 Monarch Tagging Workshop – Google Forms \n\n\n\nPhoto by Brian Robin
