SUMMARY:John Hlynialuk – Galapagos
DESCRIPTION:“The Galapagos is one of the most unique environments on the planet -its ecology\, geology and scientific value cannot be understated. The most important theory in science expressed in Darwin’s Origin of Species was supported by his observations there. And much to their credit\, the inhabitants have made the islands accessible to tourists in a wonderful harmony of nature and conservation. The talk will explore some of the aspects of the most unique place on planet Earth.”  \n\n\n\nThe talk focuses on several areas including the discovery of the Galapagos Islands\, their geology and how that has produced the unique species of organisms that exist there. Also of interest are the current efforts to maintain the unique ecosystem which\, like many other unique areas on our planet\, is under threat from various sources.  \n\n\n\nBio:  \n\n\n\nJohn Hlynialuk  (pronounced: HILL – IN – EYE – LUCK) is a retired high school teacher who taught in both Bruce and Grey County high schools. He has been an avid stargazer since his teens when his interest in general photography led to pictures of the starry sky\, comets\, the moon\, northern lights and solar and lunar eclipses. Several of his photographs have been published in national astronomy magazines and he contributes astronomical images to local publications. \n\n\n\nJohn has also helped out with astronomy programs at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre and the uniqueness of that facility has led to a deep interest in terrestrial ecology as well. While not an expert on flora or fauna\, he has a keen interest in the natural world. And as for the current talk\, how can one not be enthralled by those magnificent giant tortoises of the Galapagos!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo receive a zoom link\, please send an email\, in advance\, to    web@osfn.ca   with “Gala” in the subject line. Please note – OSFN members be sent a link via e-Herald.

SUMMARY:The Lake Huron Aquatic Ecosystem w/Arunas Liskaukas
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Huron aquatic ecosystem has experienced profound changes over the last few decades\, primarily driven by the effects of invasive species. Fish communities have been altered and food webs have been disrupted and changed. Predicting the future state of fish communities has become much more difficult as a result. I will provide an overview of management and research efforts aimed at trying to understand these changes.

SUMMARY:Grey Roots Spring Lecture Series - Orchid Quest w/ Audrey Armstrong & Willy Waterton
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS and UPDATE: Due to popular demand\, Grey Roots have added a second lecture time of 2:30 pm. You can choose which time you prefer – 1:00 or 2:30 pm. It will be the same presentation at both times. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Tuesday March 19 at 1:00 PM or 2:30 PM for Orchid Quest: with Audrey Armstrong & Willy Waterton\, Searching for Bruce & Grey’s 49 orchid species. \n\n\n\nDid you know that Orchids of Bruce & Grey is a Canadian bestseller?  When the Owen Sound Field Naturalists (OSFN) planned to revise the out of print guide\, Willy Waterton and Audrey Armstrong volunteered to update the original analogue photos of the orchids with digital imagery. The new\, fully illustrated 5th edition has two pages for each of the 49 species of orchids from Bruce and Grey counties. Join Audrey and Willy for an engaging recounting of their two-year orchid quest adventure and enjoy a fascinating overview of the many orchid species found throughout Ontario! Copies of the revised Orchids Bruce & Grey will be available for sale\, with all proceeds going to OSFN. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the 2024 Spring Lecture Series taking place in the Grey Roots Theatre on Tuesdays March 19\, 26\, and April 2 (series starts the Tuesday after March Break). Talks begin at 1:00 PM. A second talk has been added at 2:30 PM. \n\n\n\nComplimentary refreshments following. Lectures are free with regular admission. Members free as always. Check out the advantages of Grey Roots Membership. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is supported by the Owen Sound Field Naturalists. John Dickson was able to re-establish OSFN Programming partnering with Grey Roots.  It had been interrupted by COVID. \n\n\n\nOur main involvement in this venture has been to demonstrate our support of programmes at Grey Roots which have a Nature theme. Two events in their Spring Lecture series fit that very well. March 19 and March 26 with Robert Burcher. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, OSFN members who are not already members at Grey Roots\, (many of us are members of both) may attend these popular events for free. Ideally they should wear their OSFN name tags while at Grey Roots\, to avoid any confusion.  \n\n\n\nWe hope this especially benefits OSFN members who were unable to attend these presentations when we had them in our own event series a few years ago\, or who would like to see them again\, and visit Grey Roots too.

SUMMARY:Grey Roots Spring Lecture Series - John Muir Lived Here in Grey County
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday March 26 at 1:00 PM for John Muir Lived Here in Grey County with Robert Burcher. \n\n\n\nRobert Burcher is a photographer\, writer\, historical researcher and wilderness explorer who has been fascinated by John Muir\, the Scottish-born American conservationist and Sierra Club co-founder\, for decades. \n\n\n\nThe discovery of an abandoned historical plaque in the Epping Conservation Area in the Beaver Valley galvanized Robert to action. The plaque honoured the fact that John Muir had lived in Meaford for two years during the late 1800s. That was the beginning of a 30-year research project culminating in a book called My Summer of Glorious Freedom. The book was a discovery process of tracing Muir’s 1864 wanderings in Southern Ontario using plant specimens that he had collected. While living in Meaford\, Muir made several subsequent trips to Owen Sound to study with fern specialist Jessie Roy. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the 2024 Spring Lecture Series taking place in the Grey Roots Theatre on Tuesdays March 19\, 26\, and April 2 (series starts the Tuesday after March Break). Talks begin at 1:00 PM. Complimentary refreshments following.

SUMMARY:Meeting The American Kestrel\, with John Reaume
DESCRIPTION:Meeting The American Kestrel\, with John Reaume \n\n\n\n For the past 4 years we have had the pleasure of watching a pair of American Kestrels nest and raise their young in a Kestrel/Screech Owl box mounted on our workshop and visible from our back porch. This photo essay will explore and review the life history of the Kestrel with intimate views of their nesting behaviour\, thanks to an “in-the-box” camera as well as images captured from photo blinds. We will see the differing behaviours of the male and female parents as well as what the avian neighbours think of having a pair of nesting kestrels in their territories! \n\n\n\nJohn Reaume (photo by John Reaume)\n\n\n\nNesting Kestrels (photo by John Reaume)

The spring creek that can be found at the north end of the forest would have made this location highly suitable for farming activities. This property became a managed forest in 1954 when Grey County took ownership over the lands.
