DESCRIPTION:Springtime Wildflowers of the Great Smoky Mountains\, with Walter Muma While early spring still has Ontario in its grip\, the Great Smoky Mountains put on a spectacular display of wildflowers during thelatter part of April. Many species found there are familiar to us\, while others will be new to Ontario naturalists. Join Walter Muma as he shows us the many varieties of wildflowers of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. \n\n\n\n7pm Thursday January 12\, at the Bayshore Community Centre and on Zoom. To request a zoom link please email web@osfn.ca with Walter in the subject line.   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalter is an avid experienced field botanist who focusses much of his botany explorations on Grey and Bruce counties\, and from Newfoundland to Lake Superior and down into the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. His outdoor interests\, which he has pursued since his teenage years\, include tracking and wilderness survival\, hiking\, backpacking\, canoeing\, and just generally “wandering the wild areas”. \n\n\n\nHe is the curator of the Ontario Wildflowers website\, as well as the Ontario Trees\, Ontario Ferns\, and Ontario Grasses websites\, which are “go to” sites for parks staff\, environmental consultants and others who are in the business of identifying wildflowers and other plants in the field. In addition to these sites\, he has created many other websites relating to survival\, tracking\, and the outdoors. \n\n\n\nIn his work life he is a busy self-employed accounting software consultant\, custom software developer\, and accountant. \n\n\n\nWalter and his wife Julie reside in Grey County on their 100 acre natural and farmland property.

DESCRIPTION:Tamara Wilson\, a member of OSFN and the PBTC (Peninsula Bruce Trail Club) has set up six Migration Monitor Loop Hikes (10-12km each\, approx. 2hrs.\, with the pace ranging from brisk to leisurely\, on sometimes difficult terrain\, open to the public and OSFN members too).With 10am starts\, beginning March 12 to April 16\, the hikes will alternate between two routes\, for six consecutive Sundays\, inviting hikers to “Join us as we look for clues of spring’s arrival on Cape Chin North. We will alternate two routes on a weekly basis\, watching for seasonal changes along the wetlands\, small inland lakes\, woodlands and escarpment shoreline. DESCRIPTION:Wasps We Love and the Wasps We Detest: Our Complex Relationship\, with two presenters: \n\n\n\nDr. Bruce Broadbent (Entomologist) was a Research Scientist with the Federal Government/Agriculture Canada for 33 years in Ontario (Vineland and London) and his expertise is in the field of the Biological Control of Insect Pests – using tiny parasitic wasps to control pests in agriculture. His team’s greatest success stories were in the Ontario greenhouse industry. \n\n\n\nBruce was born in Montreal and grew up in Wellington\, New Zealand. He received his MSc. from McGill University (1976) and his PhD from University of Guelph (1980). He retired in 2013 and he and his wife moved from London to Southern Georgian Bay. Bruce says his children and 6 grandchildren seem to visit more often now that he lives near the Bay! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJay Cossey is a nature photojournalist who has contributed images to numerous field guides\, textbooks\, periodicals and calendars\, including all 24 images for National Geographic’s first butterfly calendar.Jay has been fascinated by bugs since he was a child. He is the author of two regional butterfly guides–one for the state of Indiana\, and one entitled  \n\n\n\nSouthern Ontario Butterflies and their Natural History\, which he will have with him for purchase.

DESCRIPTION:Introduction to How to Attract and Identify Moths.\n\n\n\nFriday June 9\, 2023 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm\n\n\n\nA Moth Night – An Introduction to How to Attract and Identify MothsWhen: Friday June 9\, 2023 \n\n\n\nLeader: Alan Macnaughton  \n\n\n\nTime: 9 pm – 11:15 pm plus Saturday morning June 10 at 7 am to open Moth traps for ID\, Photos and Release \n\n\n\n(possible extra Moth Nights June 8-11 and Rain Dates TBA ) \n\n\n\nWhere: Grey Sauble Conservation Administration Centre and Arboretum\, 237897 Inglis Falls Road\, RR 4\, Owen Sound\, Ontario N4K 5N6 \n\n\n\nAlan Macnaughton has good equipment and techniques for attracting moths\, and he can show other people how to do it. He will set up several stations and use several lights (black light) and bait (rotting bananas). It will be an excellent opportunity to learn various methods of attracting moths.  \n\n\n\nWe will want to identify and record the moths as they arrive\, perhaps by uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website — it can identify observations to species with at least 90% accuracy.  \n\n\n\nLast year’s moth night was a wild evening with close to 100 species\, including 7 species of the charismatic sphinx moths.  \n\n\n\nThis year we are holding the event in mid-June\, prime season for silk moths — the largest moths in our area. Bring either phones or regular cameras.  \n\n\n\nTo register – so we can contact you if there is any change in plans\, please contact John Dickson via email  jwdickso@gmail.com  \n\n\n\nExtra information – Guests of OSFN – Area members of the Toronto Entomologists’ Association (TEA)  may be joining us. \n\n\n\nEquipment –Bring cameras or phones for taking pictures and perhaps some transparent pill bottles to temporarily capture the moths for handing around to others before they are released. Phones are often best because they may have an internet connection (is this possible in the park?) to allow uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website for automated (image recognition software) species identification. Also\, if they happen to have it\, bring the Leckie and Beadle book\, Peterson Field Guide to the Moths of Northeastern North America. Special Guest Panelists will include  Amanda Klarer from Regeneration Canada\, plus Brenda Hsueh from Farmers for Climate Solutions\, and Kristine Hammel from Eat Local Grey Bruce. \n\n\n\nAlthough this presentation should be of interest to everyone\, we especially wish to invite the local farming population\, and those who are engaged in agricultural support services too.For best results we encourage attending this event\, in person\, at the Bayshore Community Centre\, in Owen Sound. \n\n\n\nHowever\, we will also do our best to offer the presentation virtually as a webinar\, via zoom.
