SUMMARY:'The Wasps We Love and the Wasps We Detest' with Dr. Bruce Broadbent and Jay Cossey
DESCRIPTION:Wasps We Love and the Wasps We Detest: Our Complex Relationship\, with two presenters: \n\n\n\nDr. Bruce Broadbent (Entomologist) was a Research Scientist with the Federal Government/Agriculture Canada for 33 years in Ontario (Vineland and London) and his expertise is in the field of the Biological Control of Insect Pests – using tiny parasitic wasps to control pests in agriculture. His team’s greatest success stories were in the Ontario greenhouse industry. \n\n\n\nBruce was born in Montreal and grew up in Wellington\, New Zealand. He received his MSc. from McGill University (1976) and his PhD from University of Guelph (1980). He retired in 2013 and he and his wife moved from London to Southern Georgian Bay. Bruce says his children and 6 grandchildren seem to visit more often now that he lives near the Bay! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJay Cossey is a nature photojournalist who has contributed images to numerous field guides\, textbooks\, periodicals and calendars\, including all 24 images for National Geographic’s first butterfly calendar.Jay has been fascinated by bugs since he was a child. He is the author of two regional butterfly guides–one for the state of Indiana\, and one entitled  \n\n\n\nSouthern Ontario Butterflies and their Natural History\, which he will have with him for purchase.

(direct link to the video here) \n\n\n\nOwen Sound\, with its abundant natural and forested areas\, is a great place to be an aspiring moth’er or just a person who appreciates the amazing diversity of the insect world. SUMMARY:Introduction to How to Attract and Identify Moths.
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to How to Attract and Identify Moths.\n\n\n\nFriday June 9\, 2023 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm\n\n\n\nA Moth Night – An Introduction to How to Attract and Identify MothsWhen: Friday June 9\, 2023 \n\n\n\nLeader: Alan Macnaughton  \n\n\n\nTime: 9 pm – 11:15 pm plus Saturday morning June 10 at 7 am to open Moth traps for ID\, Photos and Release \n\n\n\n(possible extra Moth Nights June 8-11 and Rain Dates TBA ) \n\n\n\nWhere: Grey Sauble Conservation Administration Centre and Arboretum\, 237897 Inglis Falls Road\, RR 4\, Owen Sound\, Ontario N4K 5N6 \n\n\n\nAlan Macnaughton has good equipment and techniques for attracting moths\, and he can show other people how to do it. He will set up several stations and use several lights (black light) and bait (rotting bananas). It will be an excellent opportunity to learn various methods of attracting moths.  \n\n\n\nWe will want to identify and record the moths as they arrive\, perhaps by uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website — it can identify observations to species with at least 90% accuracy.  \n\n\n\nLast year’s moth night was a wild evening with close to 100 species\, including 7 species of the charismatic sphinx moths.  \n\n\n\nThis year we are holding the event in mid-June\, prime season for silk moths — the largest moths in our area. Bring either phones or regular cameras.  \n\n\n\nTo register – so we can contact you if there is any change in plans\, please contact John Dickson via email  jwdickso@gmail.com  \n\n\n\nExtra information – Guests of OSFN – Area members of the Toronto Entomologists’ Association (TEA)  may be joining us. \n\n\n\nEquipment –Bring cameras or phones for taking pictures and perhaps some transparent pill bottles to temporarily capture the moths for handing around to others before they are released. Phones are often best because they may have an internet connection (is this possible in the park?) to allow uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website for automated (image recognition software) species identification. Also\, if they happen to have it\, bring the Leckie and Beadle book\, Peterson Field Guide to the Moths of Northeastern North America. One of the lights is bright and some people might want sunglasses when they get near it. \n\n\n\nAlan examining moths drawn to lights while Pam Kinchen and John Dickson look on. SUMMARY:Regenerating Life Part 3
DESCRIPTION:This Thursday\, October 26 at 7pm\, at the Bayshore Community Centre\, OSFN presents Dr. Thorsten Arnold with part  3 of the new film Regenerating Life\, by John Feldman. \n\n\n\nIncluded after the film segment\, will be a Q&A\, as well as a panel discussion  about opportunities in agriculture\, as well as barriers. Special Guest Panelists will include  Amanda Klarer from Regeneration Canada\, plus Brenda Hsueh from Farmers for Climate Solutions\, and Kristine Hammel from Eat Local Grey Bruce. \n\n\n\nAlthough this presentation should be of interest to everyone\, we especially wish to invite the local farming population\, and those who are engaged in agricultural support services too.For best results we encourage attending this event\, in person\, at the Bayshore Community Centre\, in Owen Sound. \n\n\n\nHowever\, we will also do our best to offer the presentation virtually as a webinar\, via zoom. To receive a zoom link\, please send an email\, in advance\, to web@osfn.ca   with “regenerating” in the subject line. Please note – OSFN members have been sent a link via e-Herald. \n\n\n\nAbout the film’s Part 3:\n\n\n\nPart 3 of Regenerating Life addresses the following: How to stop the main degradation and make our food system regenerative –  small-scale farmers around the world are fighting to regenerate landscapes by producing food agro ecologically\, to preserve biodiversity and restore nature’s ability to self regulate its climate. The third part is mostly around how to stop killing the biosphere\, and the main need is in changing our food system toward “farming in partnership with nature” – small-scale ecological farming. Globally\, this already is providing 70% of all foods-The film’s Director\,  John Feldman never intended to talk about agriculture\, but said that it makes no sense to talk about living landscapes/biodiversity WITHOUT talking about agriculture. Our treatment of the living landscape is the unnecessary tragedy of humankind…

SUMMARY:John Hlynialuk – Galapagos
DESCRIPTION:“The Galapagos is one of the most unique environments on the planet -its ecology\, geology and scientific value cannot be understated. The most important theory in science expressed in Darwin’s Origin of Species was supported by his observations there. And much to their credit\, the inhabitants have made the islands accessible to tourists in a wonderful harmony of nature and conservation. The talk will explore some of the aspects of the most unique place on planet Earth.”  \n\n\n\nThe talk focuses on several areas including the discovery of the Galapagos Islands\, their geology and how that has produced the unique species of organisms that exist there. Also of interest are the current efforts to maintain the unique ecosystem which\, like many other unique areas on our planet\, is under threat from various sources.  \n\n\n\nBio:  \n\n\n\nJohn Hlynialuk  (pronounced: HILL – IN – EYE – LUCK) is a retired high school teacher who taught in both Bruce and Grey County high schools. He has been an avid stargazer since his teens when his interest in general photography led to pictures of the starry sky\, comets\, the moon\, northern lights and solar and lunar eclipses. Several of his photographs have been published in national astronomy magazines and he contributes astronomical images to local publications. \n\n\n\nJohn has also helped out with astronomy programs at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre and the uniqueness of that facility has led to a deep interest in terrestrial ecology as well. While not an expert on flora or fauna\, he has a keen interest in the natural world. And as for the current talk\, how can one not be enthralled by those magnificent giant tortoises of the Galapagos!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo receive a zoom link\, please send an email\, in advance\, to    web@osfn.ca   with “Gala” in the subject line. Please note – OSFN members be sent a link via e-Herald.
