DESCRIPTION:A Moth Night – An Introduction to How to Attract and Identify MothsWhen: Tuesday July 19\, 2022 \n\n\n\nLeader: Alan Macnaughton  \n\n\n\nTime: 9 pm – 11:15 pm (July 20 Rain Date) plus Wednesday July 20 at 7 am to open Moth traps for ID\, Photos and ReleaseWhere: Grey Sauble Conservation Administration Centre and Arboretum\, 237897 Inglis Falls Road\, RR 4\, Owen Sound\, Ontario N4K 5N6 \n\n\n\nAlan Macnaughton has good equipment and techniques for attracting moths\, and he can show other people how to do it. He will set up several stations and use several lights (black light) and bait (rotting bananas). It will be an excellent opportunity to learn various methods of attracting moths. We will try to follow whatever covid-19 precautions apply at that time.  \n\n\n\nWe will want to identify and record the moths as they arrive\, perhaps by uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website — it can identify observations to species with at least 90% accuracy.  \n\n\n\nLast year we recorded 65 species. Alan also suggests that as this event will be three weeks earlier than last year we can expect a result in different species. Phones are often best because they may have an internet connection (is this possible in the park?) to allow uploading observations to the www.iNaturalist.ca website for automated (image recognition software) species identification. Also\, if they happen to have it\, bring the Leckie and Beadle book\, Peterson Field Guide to the Moths of Northeastern North America. And how can you help monarchs in our Grey/Bruce area? These questions and your questions will be addressed in the afternoon tagging workshop. Her work focuses on how aquatic insects overwinter and how the under-ice physical conditions determine who survives\, who stays active\, who eats whom\, and how that all plays into food web and community structure in subsequent seasons.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a spectacular Fall Colours hike across the top of Beaver Valley\, down through Bowles Gully and back up through the Kimberley Forest.  \n\n\n\nThis is an up to 4 hour hilly hike\, taking in parts of the Beaver Valley Ski Club hills with long views over Beaver Valley\, a stroll by the quaint ski chalets along the bottom of the hill and a picnic lunch halfway through by the Beaver River. SUMMARY:Lindsay Tract Trek to a Black Spruce Grove (locally rare) with County Forester Kevin Predon.
DESCRIPTION:Bruce County Forester Kevin Predon will lead us to this unique stand of Black Spruce\, common elsewhere\, but locally rare. Other features include the Spring Creek Wetland Complex with its resident fish\,  beavers\, turtles\, and frogs. We’ll see different tree species: along with the Black Spruce\, we’ll see Jack Pine\, White Pine\, Red Pine\, White Cedar\, Balsam Fir\, Sugar Maple\, White Birch\, Yellow Birch\, Tamarack (which might be turning yellow)  and lots of Speckled Alder. We may also see different species of animal tracks embedded in the mud along the trail – Bear\, Coyote\, Raccoon\, Hare\, Deer\, etc.  Easy/moderate hiking conditions\, with some wet areas.  This is a 9 km one-way trip hike that goes from one side of the Lindsay Tract to the other – or with a shorter 3 km (6 km round trip) option. DESCRIPTION:Date: October 13\, 2022Time: 7 pmLocation: Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre\, Owen Sound \n\n\n\nDan Ostler\, our intrepid cruise ship lecturer\, ventures forth into the Holy Land and considers the stories we all know so well through the eyes of a scientist. Correlating known History with Earth Science\, the Volcanic History of the Mediterranean\, a little Cultural Anthropology\, and the cultures of the Egyptians and Minoans and Romans (not to mention the Philistines) some rather surprising findings emerge. From the plagues of Moses to the parting of the Red Sea to the abrupt vanishing of the Minoan civilization to Joshua and the Walls of Jericho\, the stories become even more fascinating when viewed from the perspective of a scientist. \n\n\n\nOSFN is grateful to Dan for filling in once again on short notice for the scheduled speaker\, who was unable to attend due to feeling too unwell. \n\n\n\nFor our club members\, and the public\, who are not comfortable in larger groups or have to travel great distances to join us\, we are continuing to offer a ZOOM option. Details of how to join via ZOOM have been sent out to OSFN members in an eHerald. DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Invertebrate Identification with Rosie MartinDate: Sunday October 30Time: 1pm to 4pm Max group size 25 (drop in/out style rather than hike)Meet in Harrison Park (by the river just east of the playground washrooms) to learn tips on how to identify aquatic insects like (larval) dragonflies\, damselflies\, mayflies\, caddisflies and more. Rosie will have tables set up with microscopes and invertebrates collected from a nearby beaver pond.This event (it is not a hike) will run from 1:00-4:00 on a drop in/drop out basis with a maximum of 25 people at any one time. The Owen Sound Young Naturalists have been invited to join us from 2pm to 4pm. \n\n\n\nRosie will be giving a stream sampling demonstration and will talk briefly about differences between organisms living in lentic and lotic habitats. Kid friendly (please supervise around water)! \n\n\n\nRegistration: If you want to attend\, please send Rosie an email at  rosemary.martin00@gmail.com   so she can keep track of attendance for contact tracing purposes. Having completed several years of study and hands-on scientific research on both the East and West Coasts\, she is concentrating more now on her art career\, including the creation of an  amazing and beautiful mural in downtown Wiarton  and Wildlife Art for Conservation.
