SUMMARY:Owls Around Us
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, August 25\, 2019Time: 2 pm – 4 pm\nLocation: Grey Roots Theatre\, Grey Roots Museum & Archives \nDescription: It is said that if you’ve got squirrels in your neighbourhood\, then you also have owls! Really? How come I never see them? Naturalist Peter Thoem’s presentation\, on behalf of the Owl Foundation\, includes dozens of spectacular shots of owls taken here in Ontario. It shows you how owls are everywhere in our culture; they have even made it into our government. The show also deals with the mishaps (mostly man-made) that befall owls. And how the Vineland-based Owl Foundation is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned owls. \nThis program is hosted by the Owen Sound Field Naturalists. \nRegular admission rates apply. FREE for Grey Roots Members and for Owen Sound Field Naturalist Members.

SUMMARY:Connecting the Dots In Geology w/Dan Ostler
DESCRIPTION:***NEW SPEAKER***We regret to inform you that Peter Middleton (our scheduled speaker for this evening’s Indoor Meeting of OSFN) has come down with a nasty case of the flu and will need to take some time to recover. He also regrets being unable to present to you this evening\, but has offered a bonus session for the club\, to be scheduled when he has recovered. \nIn the meantime OSFN Club Member Dan Ostler has kindly agreed\, on very short notice\, to be our speaker this evening. You may remember that Dan filled in so admirably with a climate change talk two years ago. His talk was of the highest quality and members requested an encore! He has also received recognition as a favourite lecturer on International Cruise Ships. \nThe topic tonight will spring from this tagline – \n“Prompted by the recent volcanic eruption on White Island in New Zealand” \n\n***NEW VENUE***\nWe have been gradually outgrowing the facility at the Owen Sound Library and invite you to join us on December 12\, 2019 in the Bay Room at the BAYSHORE COMMUNITY CENTRE\, 1900 3rd Ave E\, Owen Sound\, ON N4K 2M6. \nThe Hospitality Team is going to take a holiday and will not be serving coffee or tea. You are welcome to bring your own GO mug with coffee or tea. This month\, there will be none provided by the Club. \nWe call it a garden. They can call it home. \nPeter Middleton’s talk focuses on the role gardens play as habitat for birds\, in a time when bird populations face ever mounting challenges to their survival. Essential elements of habitat will be considered and how they can be achieved through planning. “The elements will be illustrated using our garden as a model. The place of birds in the planet’s biological diversity is a constant sub-theme.” \nPlease Note:\nPeter is retiring from the lecture/leader circuit. Make sure you attend\, and bring your friends\, for this presentation. Peter’s presentation style and extensive knowledge will be missed. Let him know that by your presence; consider taking the time at this busy time of year to give him the gift of your presence.

SUMMARY:The Horses of Sable Island....Plus the journey “back to Newfoundland” w/Marg Gaviller
DESCRIPTION:***CHANGE OF SPEAKER***Please note this talk by Marg Gaviller\, is being postponed to a later date in order to allow Marg to be with and provide assistance to family at a difficult time. Everyone is welcome! Please see A Peter Middleton Nature Presentation for more information.\n***CHANGE OF SPEAKER*** \nThe Sable Island horses\, originally domestic animals\, are now the main occupants of the island. They roam freely in the natural environment\, comfortably in the temperate summers but battered by high winds and ferocious storms in the winter\, and without human interference. These feral horses are\, indeed\, a joy to behold.
