Bruce Birding Club Outing - March 2, 2010

The species of the day was definitely the numerous Lapland Longspurs that were found on … the side roads just south of Kinkardine. Other notables were 4 species of gulls with the Ring-billed Gulls returning, and the Glaucous Gull found on the ice on the lagoons adjacent to the garbage dump. The day was “both glorious and chilling in the wind. All in all, 30 species of birds were seen. Bruce Birding Club Outing - Feb. 17,2010

In the frozen rivers and water front of the Bruce, we managed to find 11 species of waterfowl today, thanks to the Sauble River (Sauble Beach) which does not freeze because of the fast flow of the water and Colpoy’s Bay (just north of Wiarton)which is too large to freeze entirely. We saw 4 bald Eagles and three of them were in the vicinity of the Sauble River mouth floating up and down on ice flows. We also had 4 Common Ravens, 3 in the town of Wiarton and one in a tree munching on left over bird.

The weather was overcast with temperatures ranging from -3 to 0. Winds were only felt when standing on the waterfront. The Bruce birding Club went out today focussing on winter time Snowy Owls and Raptors and had some pleasant additional surprises. Two species of Eagles, Golden and Bald, along with Bohemian Waxwings and Northern Shrike were happily observed. Also, the sought after winter migrant Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks were found . In total 28 species of birds were recorded. For a complete list of birds seen and locations they were found in today, please contact birding@owensoundfieldnaturalists.ca. The weather conditions had temperatures ranging between -1 and -3 Centigrade. There was one burst of sunlight around noon, with mostly overcast clouds and 2 episodes of serious snowfall, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Forestry Lecture Series

The Bruce County Museum is holding a series of 13 lectures on forestry, in keeping with the Museum’s theme of wood in 2010.

The lectures begin on Feb. 13 and end on October 12, 2010. The series includes a bus trip to the forests of the Bruce Peninsula.
