We Oppose the Keppel Quarry Expansion

Local environmental groups have joined forces to object to the proposed expansion of the Keppel Quarry northwest of Owen Sound.

The groups share concern that the proposed 144 acre quarry expansion will blast rock 55 feet below the water table in an area that is adjacent to The Glen Conservation Area, a County forest, and a provincially significant wetland that is an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI) within the NEC Biosphere.

Massive pumping of water is required under the quarry extraction plan.  Concerns persist that the proposed expansion of the quarry will lower the water table and negatively impact the source water feeding the Park Head Creek and communities from Shallow Lake to Lake Huron.

Groups that have joined this coalition include: PERL - Protecting Escarpment Rural Land; CONE - Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment, Ontario Nature, OSFN - Owen Sound Field Naturalists, BPEG - Bruce Peninsula Environment Group, SFN - Saugeen Field Naturalists and GABP - Grey Association for Better Planning.
